Biography: Among the early settlers of Greenhill community was George Washington Gilpin. He was one of the first settlers in northeast Titus County and became a prominent cotton planter as well as church worker. Mr. Gilpin was born in Morgan County, Georgia, October 27, 1827, and came to Texas and this area in 1849. According to state archives, at the age of 34 years, on May 6, 1862, he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army in Captain L.M. Fargason's Company, under Colonel R. Waterhouse, Commanding Texas Volunteers, at Dangerfield. Later in the year 1849 the Ellis family settled in northeast Titus County and in December of that year their daughter Sarah A., married George Washington Gilpin, and to them were born 11 children, all reared in the Greenhill Community.
